Today's game counts on hitters to be productive.
What we as coaches have to do is decide what is our level and what is expected of that hitter in our system. Are you
a parent just trying to get your young players to make contact? Are you a travel coach trying to win? Hitting is a balance
of mechanics and learning to understand the mental side of hitting. How do we cover both in such a short time at practice?
First, you have to have an easy, simple approach to mechanics. You should break the hitter's swing
down and then concentrate on one mechanical issue at a time such as balance. Second, you have to implement
situational hitting and base running. Players need to learn how to hit and run and move runners over. Aggressive
baserunning can win you ball games but needs to be worked on during practice with intensity.
My new book,
The Power Hitting System, covers these topics. For additional help you may join our baseball club and receive
access to monthly drills, articles and a personal video evaluation. I will share my past experiences of building
new mechanics, developing a good mental approach and maintaining a daily workout.
Keep Swinging, Tony
